Be Present

A 3-frame self-acceptance webcomic strip featuring colorful heart characters. Upper Left: Red and pink heart characters are laying on a beach. The pink heart is relaxing with their eyes closed and arms to their sides. The red heart has one eye open looking towards the pink heart. Their hands are on their head. There’s a wave coming in from the bottom of the frame. Text above the red heart reads: I can’t focus. The waves are are too distracting. Text above the pink heart reads: It sounds like you are focusing. Upper Right: The red heart character is now looking at the pink heart character with both eyes wide open. The wave has receded. Text above the red heart reads: It does? Text above the pink heart reads: You’re focusing on our surroundings instead of your to-do list. Lower: Both the red and pink heart characters are relaxing with their eyes closed and arms to their sides. The wave has reappeared at the bottom of the frame. Text above the red heart reads: Oh, yeah! I am.

I used to suck at being present! If I’m not already anxious, I know my brain is about to assign me something soon enough.

Luckily, I’ve learned to redirect myself by yelling, “That’s future Dominique’s problem!” when I start worrying about the future.

When I start worrying about the past, I try to stop and remind myself of every good thing that has happened since.

If it’s something I actually need to address right now, I take the time to address it!

For me, being present means acknowledging my anxious thoughts and where they’re coming from.

And if I feel it’s out of my control, I can give myself the freedom to release it!

I’m still a work in progress but it has helped me lower my stress levels.

How do you lower yours?
