How I Use Light Blue For Color Therapy

Dominique is wearing a light blue sweatshirt. She is sitting down with her right elbows on her knees. Her right hand is open, raised, and resting on the side of her face. Her left hand is down and resting on her right thigh. She is smiling. There is a light purple wall behind her with a white shelf holding two plants and a light blue lantern with a lit tealight candle inside.

A big part of slowing down requires you to trust yourself.

Light blue asks…

Do you trust yourself to make good decisions? Do you see a difference between being lazy and being kind to yourself?

Do you know yourself to be someone who will work to bring a goal to life?

Do you believe you deserve the things you desire enough to know they won’t pass you by just because you decided to take care of yourself?

Lower Right: A light blue heart character waving with one arm close to its body and holding a phone in its other hand. Text above the light blue heart reads: Hey, I’m your friendly reminder to slow down and be kind to yourself!

About Light Blue

Light blue is soft and easygoing. It’s soothing and reassuring. It’s peaceful and still. It’s welcoming and limitless. It’s relaxing and a champion for rest. It’s a great reminder that it’s okay to slow down and be kind to ourselves.

I had the luxury of writing the very first draft of this blog post while sitting on the beach with my mom.

After several days of relaxing, my brain was filled with thoughts about light blue and the joys of slowing down.

2024 was an extremely busy year. The summer and fall months turned out to be pretty stressful, too.

Typing my thoughts on the beach allowed me to capture the changes I felt in my body in real time. It also gave me another excuse to fill my phone with pictures and videos of beautiful light blue skies.

(I would have done that anyway!)

Me and my mom went to the beach 3 separate times on this trip. (We even got to spend time with one of my best friends during 2 of them!)

The first day was calm. The second day was like being caught in a sandstorm. The third day was somewhere in the middle.

During those 3 beach days, the water went from moving gently to being too choppy for anyone to get in it. I mentioned the third day being somewhere in between because people were able to get in, but most didn’t go far out.

And while there were clouds the first 2 days, there were none on the third.

I couldn’t help but notice that no matter how much the water, sand, clouds, and people moved, the light blue sky was just there.

Almost like it was up there saying, “Hey, it’s still a great day to be outside.”

The sky made it easy to slow down and relax. That’s the power of light blue!

Light Blue in Nature

If the weather’s nice, you can sit or leisurely walk outside. This is my favorite way to enjoy light blue! It’s also the easiest.

In this blog post, I shared how much I enjoy taking pictures of flowers, plants, and trees during walks. I enjoy capturing the sky too.

Even when I don’t pull my phone out to capture the moment, I always make a point to look up it.

It reminds me to slow down and exist in the moment instead of fixating on the things I need to do when I get back home.

With that said, I know there are reasons you might not be able to get outside.

Maybe you’re like me and live in a place where it’s cold and grey for almost half the year.

Maybe your neighborhood isn’t walkable.

Maybe there aren’t parks near you.

Or maybe you have a medical issue that keeps you inside.

Light blue is just as powerful from a window!

Light Blue on Your Body

If you’d prefer something you can enjoy regardless of the time of day or year, you can wear light blue.

Wearing light blue to work can be a subtle reminder to take it easy that day. (I talked about doing things at a slower pace here.)

Wearing light blue after work can be a great way to remind yourself to wind down and let go of the stresses of the day.

I don’t have a lot of light blue in my wardrobe but there are a few times I like to wear it.

One of my favorite shirts is a super soft, cropped sweatshirt I wear when I’m feeling anxious but still need to get things done.

The pajama shirt I wish I could clone is an equally soft, oversized nightshirt.

And some of the cutest pieces I bought last year were a skort and new sneakers.

All of these pieces are light blue!

Whatever you wear, consider choosing something comfortable and soft to the touch. This softness can be a physical reminder for you to be softer with yourself.

Light Blue in Your Space

If light blue clothing isn’t your vibe, you can surround yourself with light blue.

Light blue bedding might be the perfect reminder for your brain to finally shut down at the end day.

Painting your bathroom light blue might be an impactful reminder to do your morning routine slowly or wind down with your night routine.

In my high school and early college years, I was obsessed with sky-print, so I owned a lot of light blue. I still have a sheet set, a comforter, and a throw blanket.

When I happened to find the exact same knitted blankets I remembered having as a small child, I chose the light blue one.

When I decided to buy lanterns to contain my tea light candles so my (late) cat wouldn’t get to them, I chose light blue.

Like the light blue clothing, all of the blankets and bedding are super soft.

Whatever you add to your space, consider choosing something you’ll see just when you need a reminder to slow down and breathe.

The stuffed shark has a light blue body with a dark blue top fin and stripes. There is a light purple wall behind her with a white shelf holding two plants and a light blue lantern with a lit tealight candle inside.

Light Blue in Your Routines

If you consider yourself to be a creature of habit, you can add light blue to your regular routines.

A light blue laptop case and keyboard cover might be the key to you remembering to take your time at work.

Light blue plates and bowls might be a simple way to wind down at dinnertime so you can truly enjoy your meal.

I have a light blue plushie I affectionately refer to as My Emotional Support Shark.

It’s also a pouch!

For 10 years I had a beautiful cat with a lot of personality named Conda.

Though almost 3 years have passed since she died, I am just not ready to get another cat.

But I do miss the cuddles and companionship that come with having a pet.

One day I randomly stuck the plushie under my arm while sitting on the sofa. I was a little caught off guard by how much it reminded me of having a cat snuggled up close to me. So I kept doing it.

When I packed my hospital bag for my third surgery, I decided to take My Emotional Support Shark with me.

Since it was my 4th hospital stay, I knew it would be nice to keep certain items in the bed with me so I didn’t have to reach or ask for them.

In addition to having easy access to my chapstick and chewing gum, the shark also ended up being the perfect comfort item when things got scary during my time in the ICU.

Whatever you add to your routine, consider how easy it is to add it in. Light blue is an easygoing color so it should be easy to include in your day too!

Shopping for Light Blue

When I’m inspired to use a new color, I shop in my house first.

As someone who loves colors, I usually have at least one item I can use.

If I don’t have anything, I’ll try changing my laptop or phone background to that color.

So if you‘re considering using light blue, please don’t feel like you need to buy something new to get the most out of the color.

With that said, there’s also nothing wrong with making a new purchase.

When I bought the light blue clothing I mentioned earlier, I was already planning to buy those items. I chose the light blue option because I liked the items in that color.

I suggest you do the same.

Pastels and midtones are always “in,” but they seem to be easiest to find during the spring and summer months. They’re also pretty easy to find in items related to rest, relaxation, and self-care.

And if you prefer more practical items, there’s a good chance those items come in light blue, too!

Last summer, I found some light blue (and green) basket totes at IKEA. They make straightening up a room significantly less labor-intensive because I can just toss things into it instead of walking back and forth.

They also make transporting laundry easier and safer.

Remember, the intention behind the color matters more than the amount. So don’t be afraid to start small and add more light blue as needed!

Regardless of how you acquire your light blue, just be sure it makes sense for you and your lifestyle.

And no matter how you plan to add it to your life, think about how you want to feel when you see it.

Are you drawn to light blue? How does it make you feel? Let me know in the comments.
